When we arrived at the Adult Training Program facility in San Marcos we were greeted by Mike, one of the teachers at the school. He led us into one of the classrooms and we got to meet some of the students in the program. Shortly after we met with other people from NCCSE and began discussing the program and their ideas for the video. It was my understanding that they primary target audience for the video was possible employers and parents interested in getting their children enrolled in the program. We also talked about possible interview subjects and decided that we would interview one of the employers, a member of NCCSE, and a graduate of the ATP program who now works at Dogtopia in San Marcos. We talked about access to facilities and releases for the students and people who would appear in the video. We talked about which days and hours would be best for filming and we are planning on doing the bulk of our shooting on Tuesdays and Fridays. We decided that we would also shoot some of the classroom activites as well as film the students running the student store at San Marcos High School. The members of NCCSE were very open to letting us make most of the decisions about the video. They seem really laid back and excited for the work that we are going to provide them with. I look forward to continuing this project with them.

As we started out meeting with our community group we began discussing the overall spectrum of the video. They had given us the information on who and what they wanted the video to show. One of the main points they wanted to convey to the community was to show the parents what the program is about. How student interact in the community and to give the parents a sense of comfort as they let their child progress on their own. As well as showing future students and current students, that are past the age required for this program, to continue in the program and to with their individual progress. The goals I have for the video are to creating a video style that would show an importance of this program to the community.

When I attended the 1st group meeting all the staff members greeted us with great respect and that made me feel very comfortable.  We met many of the current adult disabled students and got to know them a bit on the personal level. Some of the adult students were shy while others were very outgoing.  As we all sat down to talk about our plans and goals everyone seemed to be on the same page of what our main objectives were  as well as our main visionary aspects to our final product.

- we agreed to have a documentary feel to the short video.
-we agreed to interview a few staff members as well as current employees and employers that are part of the ATP program

-we also thought it would be a great idea to interview some of the current students and follow them around and to show how their average day is like

1st Meeting

Today we had our first meeting with the teachers and students of NCCSE. It went very well gathered a lot of great information for the project and we are excited to get started !

Last week, we met with a few people from the NCCSE at a location they had off of Mission Ave. here in San Marcos. I liked that their room was small and clean, but as we were informed, most of our focus would be about them “outside the classroom” and doing more “hands on work. Moreover, we all discussed various ways to tackle their video. My role during the meeting was being an active participant (like everyone else) in asking questions or for clarification when needed. Furthermore, I took down brief notes about what key points they wanted to address in their short video.

Notes from our meeting:

--It's about students with disabilities (18-22) who usually get no h.s. diploma

Goal:

--want people (employers) to feel comfortable even though they have unique needs

--persuade employers that we are providing them with "adequate" employees

--make deaf students understand that they too, can be in the program and continue

--families and parents should/will see this as well

--parents: let go of their fears and promote independence of their kids

Furthermorore, we talk to Mike and Angela about employee/employer interviews, so let's be sure to touch base with them so we can get employee stuff taken care of (as it is seemingly the hardest), the rest should be easy to film.
We also agreed to film Tuesdays (mostly) and Fridays (those of us that could).

We received their logo and they should be reviewing their own release forms.

The direction that we went want to take is a day in the life of one of the students. which will include an average day there with the organization. Its going to portray a documentary style that we feel will capture exactly what the program itself is doing on a day to day basis. Being that i am the production manager during the meeting I made sure to get the contact information from all of the people we will be working with in the project as well as ask how their personal availability may or may not constrain the time we need for the project. Some goals that we have set forth in the upcoming weeks are:

  • Finalizing days for shooting within the organizations building as well as public locations.
  • Obtaining all release forms that we would need to start shooting. (students first)
  • Scouting the locations to shoot and taking photographs of locations
  • Revising production schedule to match the dates and times that are going to be verified.
  • Completing all location shooting within 1 -2 weeks
